SURROUNDINGS

Sighetu Marmatiei is located in the north-west of the Maramures, on the left side of the Tisa River. In the near by, at short distances, you can visit some of the most famous attractions of Maramures.

Sighetu Marmatiei is well known internationally for:

• The open air Maramures Village Museum
• The international poetry festival
• The Winter Festival
• The Memorial of the Victims of Communism

This memorial symposium is part of an important project, sustained by the “Civic Academy” Foundation, the European Council and the Romanian Government. The former political prison was transformed into a “Museum of the arrested mind” and into a European Center for Studies about totalitarianism problems and anticommunist resistance

In 1981 The Maramures Village Museum from Sighet was opened by the most prestigious institutions of patrimony in Romania. In Sighet there is also The Memorial House of Ellie Wiesel – the birthplace of the Nobel Prize winner for peace.
